My Goldman Sachs Internship Experience!
Tyler Tyson is an 11th grader at AMS III who participated last school year in a Goldman Sachs internship program for high school students. Here she shares her exciting experience.
During this school year I applied to the Goldman Sachs Program. I was informed about this program through both my guidance counselor and my assistant principal. This program was exclusive and only students with a GPA of a 3.0 were valid to apply. That was one of first things that made me interested ,a challenge. Over 500 students applied for this program ,I was 1 out of 500! I wanted the opportunity to push myself and compete for something I really desired. I am not the most athletic girl, I never cared for being competitive towards any sport related activity , however when it comes to academics I am always out on the field and willing to participate.
The Goldman Sachs Program is a program that actively seeks out to recruit a wide range of talented students on high academic levels to participate in their program. The main purpose of the Goldman Sachs program is to assist young adults in their journey towards being successful in both their professional and academic life. Specific things that I can mention that helped me a lot is all the lectures we attended. The lectures consisted of valuable information that can help either expand the skills I already possessed or helped me develop new ones. Specific seminars that were assigned to us taught me about proper decorum and etiquette in a work environment, how to dress during an interview, how to network and they also provided us with a seminar that stated crucial information that I needed about college such as application fees, the SAT, the ACT, and interviews. Each one of these lectures lasted up to two hours, which is another aspect of this program that helps students prepare for college, because most college courses would be a duration of two hours.
My biggest take away from this entire program was that Goldman Sachs provided me with a mentor. My mentor’s name is Phoebe and she helps me with everything I need. If I have a question related to academics or a professional lifestyle she would answer all of them. The Goldman Sachs program paired every member up with a mentor based on questions they asked when they got accepted also based on their application so your mentor can be more relatable and you can feel more comfortable. They allowed us to interview our mentors and gain some information about them and information that we can use in the future. I’ve learned so much through this experience that I am interested in applying again next year.
Advice that I would give to lower classmen is if you receive the chance to better yourself in any way you should take it. I think the main reason why many of my peers that did meet the requirements did not complete the application was because of obstacles they would face. The application was long, and required two essays to be completed and four prompts that required more than 250 words. Also it was very competitive because many of my other intelligent classmates were also planning to apply. However, in my experience it is best to go for it because the opportunity is phenomenal and you should not sell yourself short. Another benefit of getting accepted is also receiving certification that you are good enough, and if you get denied that gives you the opportunity to improve. The same obstacle you’ll face applying to a program like this is the same one you’ll face applying to college starting now will be the best practice.I advise all of you to apply to this program this year. Other than the benefit of gaining the experience you also can stay up to three weeks away from home on a college campus, which was a really fun, and you meet new people. You don’t have to sign up for the same one I did there are several more where you can fly off to Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, L.A and do the same thing. My last piece of advice for students to remember that the best way to predict your future is to create it.
