Advanced Math & Science II

February Staff Highlight: Ms. Megan O’Donnell

What do you teach?

I teach Living Environment to 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.

Why do you teach?

I have always felt at home in school. Growing up I always loved learning, and I especially loved science because it helped me gain a sense of understanding about the world around me. I hope that as a teacher I can inspire my students to love science and learning as much as I do. I also enjoy teaching because I love working with energetic young adults. As a teacher, every single one of my days is different, and I am constantly learning about myself, my students, and the world around us.

What do you love about AMS II (or like so far)?

I love working at AMS II because of the students and the staff. The students here make me laugh every single day and watching them grow academically and as people brings me so much joy. It is an honor to work with a staff that cares so deeply for our students. I constantly am inspired by our staff’s passion and dedication.  I know that when I come to work each day,  I am going to a place where learning is valued as well as our individual relationships.

3 Things people may not know about you?

I think I am allergic to everything.
I love putting together Ikea furniture.
I never say no to karaoke.

What are your hobbies outside of school?

Outside of school, I love to explore New York City, the place I have called home for the last 4 years. I also like to spend a lot of time with my friends and my family on Long Island. The beach is my favorite place to be. I love to watch movies, see shows, and try new restaurants.  I also have a passion for visual art, so I enjoy  museums and galleries where I can admire it. I also love drawing and painting.

What are some highlights (favorite moments) of yours since starting at AMS II?

My highlights at AMS II so far have been the awesome experiences I’ve had with my students. Last year being able to bring the entire 9th grade to the Museum of Natural History for an Earth Science trip was really fun, and brought science to life for all of us. Every year the Health Fair and Rocking the Boat trip with Living Environment are fun and different experiences that get students out of the classroom and I really enjoy watching kids that normally don’t love school come alive. This year was the first year that we had the BioBus, a mobile science lab, visit our school, and 250 students were able to experience what it is like to use a high tech microscope. What’s fun for my students is fun for me too.

What has been one of your favorite personal grows?
This year, I am trying to get back into reading, a hobby which I used to love but I have trouble finding time for recently with such a busy schedule. It’s fun to make little goals for myself, and to work towards achieving them.
