OVERVIEW

A critical link exists between supportive school facilities and positive student outcomes. As part of its work on small schools, New Visions designs strategies, working in collaboration with the Department of Education and the School Construction Authority, for creating high-quality learning environments that meet the instructional and extra-curricular needs of students, teachers, administrators, and the greater community.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Facilities that support a school’s specific educational program and successful teaching and learning are essential for sustaining positive student outcomes. The goals of this work are:

> To develop models of excellence that link school facilities design to effective pedagogy
> To ensure a school facility development process incorporates input from educators and the community.
> To further establish school buildings as centers within the community, with a set of assets that benefit both students and the community.

As small schools grow by a grade each year, and more new schools are created, emerging questions require solutions:

> How will the existing large campus buildings that currently house small schools manage their growth and adapt to their new function as shared buildings?
> Where will additional new schools be located?
> How can schools innovatively evolve and be better designed to leverage community engagement and extend learning and development beyond school hours?

To answer these questions, New Visions explores the following areas related to school facilities and campus operations:

> Transformation of Existing Campus Buildings
> New Capacity Strategies via Public/Private Partnerships
> Innovative Place-based Instructional and Community Asset Design
> Building Green
